General Educational Objectives for
2009 Courses
Upon completion of an IAS-USA course, participants will be able to:
- Design antiretroviral strategies that consider current data on:
- When to initiate therapy
- Managing initial treatment failure and complicated failure and the use of newly approved drugs and assays
- Mechanisms of antiretroviral resistance and nuances in interpreting resistance test results
- Drug-drug interactions among antiretrovirals and between other medications
- The status of investigational antiretroviral drugs and classes
- Difficult metabolic complications and toxicities of HIV and its therapies
- Identify and discuss new issues in HIV pathogenesis, as they impact clinical treatment strategies
- Formulate appropriate management strategies for HIV coinfection, such as hepatitis B and C viruses and sexually transmitted infections
- Describe the incidence, diagnosis, and management of common manifestations of HIV disease, such as oral and dermatologic, as well as opportunistic infections and diseases
- Formulate appropriate management strategies for special populations such as substance users
- Discuss topics in HIV clinical treatment specific to the needs of the regional HIV specialists
