OVERVIEW

The 11th Annual Clinical Update for Ryan White (RW) Parts A, B, C, and D practitioners will be held in conjunction with the 2008 RW HIV/AIDS Program Grantee Meeting, “New Era, New Act,” from August 25-27, 2008 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC.

The goal of the Clinical Update is to provide a comprehensive overview of current clinical issues in HIV management and current strategies in HIV medical care for practitioners in RW Parts A, B, C, and D funded programs. This state-of-the-art Continuing Medical Education (CME) program will include 3 days of lectures and interactive workshops. Attendees are encouraged to bring cases and questions for discussion. This CME Update is sponsored by the International AIDS Society–USA (IAS–USA).

The Clinical Update is co-chaired by Laura W. Cheever, MD, ScM, Michael S. Saag, MD, and Carmen D. Zorrilla, MD. The Clinical Update is planned and supported in collaboration with staff from the HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services. This activity has been approved for AMA PRA credit.

Clinical Update speakers selected approximately 15 to 20 key slides from their presentations that they thought would be useful to attendees who are presenting updates from this update to their colleagues.


CLINICAL UPDATE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The goal of this Clinical Update is to provide a comprehensive and timely overview of HIV treatment issues and current strategies in HIV medical care for practitioners in Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program–funded Parts A, B, C, and D clinics.

The meeting will promote active participation among practitioners throughout the 3 days of lectures and workshops sessions. Attendees are encouraged to bring cases and questions for discussion.

Upon completion of the Clinical Update, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Identify current issues and future trends in the use of long-term cohort data in HIV clinical research
  • Discuss new effective methods for outreach to HIV patient populations and retention in care
  • Design antiretroviral treatment regimens that consider the latest data on
    • initiating antiretroviral therapy
    • management of complicated antiretroviral failure and drug resistance
    • the role of HIV resistance testing and other assays and nuances in
    • interpretation of the results
    • the status of new investigational antiretrovirals and new classes
    • drug-drug interactions among newer approved and investigational antiretrovirals
  • Describe the management of hepatitis B and C viral coinfections with HIV using new approved and investigational agents
  • Evaluate neurological and cognitive dysfunction in HIV-infected patients, including in aging populations
  • Formulate new processes for quality improvement in HIV clinics emphasizing the clinician’s role in supporting and implementing changes
  • Develop clinic-based strategies to address culture and competence
  • Discuss the incidence, diagnosis, and management of opportunistic diseases, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and dermatologic manifestations.
  • List the major issues regarding the management of specific patient populations with HIV infection, including children, adolescents, and women

This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 15.25 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
